Volgograd Arena is being built on the site of the former stadium of local club Rotor Volgograd. During the construction process, numerous remnants from the Second World War were uncovered at the site, which was part of the Battle of Stalingrad (the city’s former name) during the conflict. The stadium is located on the banks of the Volga River and at the foot of the Mamayev Kurgan war memorial complex – at the top of which is the giant “Motherland Calls” statue. Volgograd Arena will host group stage matches during Russia 2018, and after the World Cup will become the new home of Rotor Volgograd.
